Not sure about any options to try recover the existing print bed but if you're going to replace it go for glass, I got a free piece of scrap glass cut to size for my local glass shop and it's been working great for PLA (haven't tried ABS but doubt it would have any issues) and spray a light coat of hairspray on it before a print to assist with adhesion and haven't had any.
